When I am planning my races for this series, one of my first texts goes to my friend Jacqulyn Webster. We ran the Goofy Challenge together last year - where you run the Disney half marathon of Saturday, and the full marathon the very next day. This is a bucket list race for many runners, and I was so happy to share it with her.
You might think that I have known her for years, But actually we just met a few months before this, through a mutual friend, at the Tower of Terror 10-Miler. We both struggled at that hot and humid night race, but we bonded over walk breaks and ice packs.
We have run a lot since then, and are registered for many races together this coming year. I look forward to these days with her and she makes the planning and preparation more fun. She gives me support, encouragement, and keeps me accountable to my goals.
We tell each other when we hear about great races and see pics of cool bling. We discuss our strengths and weaknesses and dream about races to come. We push each other when we struggle during the run... during those miles when we wonder if we can go on.
Every runner needs to have this friend, it is one of the secrets to success. Finding someone who likes to run for the same reasons you do. Who can pace well with you, and who continues to encourage you between races will keep you on track and focused.
